Harlem on A Sunday is an experience not to be missed!
Learn about the neighborhood’s origins as a rural Dutch community to its transformation into a summer retreat for New York's most prominent families. Explore the significance of the Harlem Renaissance, a social, intellectual and cultural revolution that cemented Harlem's status as the epicenter of Black culture. During this golden age, African-Americans leaving the South for better opportunities flourished as a community. Hear about Harlem's troubled past during the 1960's and 1970's and experience its present-day community beam with pride as it revels in Harlem’s new Renaissance.
Explore famous sights and landmarks such as Columbia University, City College, Morningside Heights, the Morris Jumel Mansion, Sylvan Terrace, Strivers Row, the Cotton Club, the Apollo Theater, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Sugar Hill, Duke Ellington's apartment and statue, the famous 125th street and many more.
Join a local congregation during their Sunday worship service and experience the soul-stirring power of gospel music.
*We spend about 1 hour at the church for the beginning of the service often referred to as song and praise. We exit before the sermon so as not to disrupt the congregation. Choirs are comprised of church members that volunteer their time. Every Sunday has a different meaning and choirs vary accordingly. These are authentic religious ceremonies services not performances for entertainment.
*We attend local church services in Harlem or in the Bronx. For the past 30 years, Harlem Spirituals has developed relationships and followed with many congregations and choirs. For this reason, church services may also take place in the Bronx. This in no way affects the content or timing of our tour.
If you are not available on Sunday, come and join us on our Harlem Gospel tour on Wednesday!
My mother did your Gospel tour years ago and raved about it so much that I suggested it to my group of friends and all six of us went. We loved it. The historical tour of Harlem was a bonus. Thanks for the tip re Wednesday at the Apollo. We spent our last night in NYC there and had a ball.
Really enjoyable! Thank you!
Nice tour to Harlem and The Bronx with a great "finale": participate in a Sunday Gospel celebration. I am not religious but I feel the power at the Church and really loved it! Highly recommended!
This was so much more ham just going to church - you have a full tour of Harlem and it’s fantastic! We learned so much and our tour guide was a Harlem local which made it so much more interesting. This is a must do for anyone visiting New York.
We had a great time, especially at St John’s baptist Church : so much joy and emotion. Thank you Sébastien for your choice, Thank the people who welcomed us. A personal opinion : I would have liked walking more in the streets of Harlem. It was a very interesting tour. Thanks so much.
This was a winderful capper to our week in New York. Peggy Taylor (a college classmate of mine) was simply outstanding. Don’t change a thing.
Damien was our host for the morning and led us through the history of Harlem on our way to an amazing experience of being welcomed into a Gospel Church service. An incredible experience even if you are not a regular Church goer. Thanks for all the tips on New York City as well Damien. Highly recommended.
La experiencia me resulto fascinante. Excelente el guía turístico
Excellent tour. Would recommend! Gospel service fantastic to see & be apart of.
Organisation impeccable, guide très avenant et compétent, gospel à la hauteur de nos attentes, à conseiller vivement.
We flew in to NY on a Sunday morning and immediately joined the Harlem Gospel Tour Sunday. 4 hour tour of the historic and jazz sites of Harlem and then attended Sunday service where we really enjoyed the uplifting, soul stirring power of the gospel music. Certainly one way to get over jet lag. You felt welcome in the church regardless of our denomination or otherwise and a great intro to NY. Guide was a local and it felt like him talking about his home area. I will always recommend this one.
We met our tour guide at the office along with a family of 3 and our unforgettable journey began. He is possibly the best guide i have ever met. He has both knowledge and charm. We took the nearby subway to Harlem to a great soulfood dinner at sylvias where famous people smiled from the walls. Barack Obama watched over our table. A short van ride took us to the cotton club. It was great fun and a charming man got all the women dancing followed shortly by their partners. I can't remember when I last danced. The absolute best was king Solomon Hicks who absolutely lit up the stage with his talent. The only quibble was the rather over enthusiastic trumpet player wanting to know why my husband was buying the Solomon Hicks CD and not what he was selling. It was a brilliant fun evening.
I really enjoyed the tour. The Gospel Service was very warm, energetic and welcoming! A very special experience. The guides from Harlem Spirituals were very knowledgeable. The also helped me to catch a taxi after the tour, as I wanted to see the Brooklyn bridge afterwards and still catch my flight on the same day. Many thanks!
Great tour - I thought it was just a church service but was pleasantly surprised to get an informative funny quirky tour of New York and an incredible 1 hour spectacular- the pastor , the congregation and the choir was straight out of “COMING TO AMERICA “ - you have got to see it to believe it.
Well prepared, informational history lesson of Harlem, plus an inspirational church visit. We loved it!
Loved the church we went to and our guide was really nice and told us all kind of stuff about Harlem and New York. Loved the experience!
Never had experienced a true gospel celebration, neither the feeling of the Harlem area. The event was 100% up to my expectations. Good information on the neighborhood by our guide Sheila, and a very 'interactive' celebration in church with the choir. (singing Happy Days all together in the front- wow!). Recommended!
A very informative history tour of Harlem and beautiful gospel service. The team here right from checking in to the tour guide were all so incredible welcoming. Our tour guide Alvin was a lovely man.. a walking knowledge book.!!
