Journey into the past and see the African-American Mecca for writers and artists at the turn of the century. Hear about Harlem's troubled past during the 1960's and 1970's and view its present day community beam with pride as it revels in the new renaissance.
See famous sights and landmarks such as St. John the Divine, Columbia University, City College, Morningside Heights, the Morris Jumel Mansion, Sylvan Terrace, Strivers Row, the Cotton Club, the Apollo Theater, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the famous 125th street and Sugar Hill - where Duke Ellington lived! Join a local congregation for the Sunday worship mass service* and experience the soul-stirring power of Gospel music. After, enjoy a soul food brunch at one of Harlem's local restaurants.
Soul Food is traditional African American cuisine that originated in the rural Southern United States. The cuisine dates back to slavery as African Americans had to make due with whatever meager foods and ingredients were available to them. This evolved into a hearty and delicious comfort food styled cuisine. You will enjoy healthy portions of spicy BBQ ribs, fried fish and chicken, freshly baked corn bread, collard greens, black eye peas, okra, and macaroni and cheese.
After the brunch, guests will escorted back to our offices, located in the Times Square area. They can also choose to remain in Harlem to explore the neighborhood and return their own. Tip* 125th street offer some great shopping options.
If you are not available for our Harlem Tour on Sunday, come and join us on our Harlem Gospel Tour with Lunch on WEDNESDAY!
*For many years we have developed relations with churches in Harlem and followed their congregations and choirs. For this reason, church stops may now take place in the north of Harlem or in the Bronx. This will in no case affect the content or the schedule of the tour.
The whole experience was wonderful and exceeded expectations. The tour guide was clearly passionate about Harlem and New York more broadly, the Gospel Service powerful and uplifting, and brunch was tasty and filling. I would recommend the Harlem Gospel Tour with Brunch to all.
Previously visited Harlem but this tour opened it up much more with extra information and explanation. Found church service disappointing - loud +++ , so much so that could not understand a word said or sung, which made it difficult to enter in. However, the three piece band and the most wonderful jazz singer at the Cotton Club more than made up with great renditions of well known gospel and secular songs, incorporating the gospel message in both. Had we not booked this addition to the tour we would certainly have missed out - thank you.
Two excellent tour guides & wonderful staff
Our guides were stellar at making us feel comfortable. We learned a lot about NYC in general, and especially about Harlem. Bishop Gaylord and the congregation made us feel welcomed, and just another part of the church service. The gospel singing was inspirational. The brunch and jazz trio at the Cotton Club was a fitting end to the day. We highly recommend this tour for people who want to know more about the African-American experience in NYC and the US.
it was a very nice sunday morning, I would like spent more time at religious service but its ok. and the brunch was good with the live music. all ok.
I am a writer, working on a book about Glory Foods, the first food company to target the African-American consumer with soul food made convenient outside the south. As a white woman, I have my work to do to understand the soulful culture I am writing about. That was my motivation for signing up for the Harlem Gospel Tour and Brunch. But I got so much more! The worship experience was absolutely transformative. I was moved to tears by the awesome power of the congregation's faith and beautiful voices. I am so appreciative of the church's willingness to host us tourists. The Soul Food Brunch delivered so much more than I expected, too! Not just good soul food and a good jazz trio, but a vocalist who brought to the Cotton Club the same soulful spirit that lifted the congregation at Thessalonia Baptist Church. She had us dancing and testifying and feeling her love--and God's.
Very nice and interesting tour.
Loved the tour -church experience is a must for all! Guid was very informative and entertaining. Only part we didnt enjoy was the restaurant choice Cotton Club - it was very hot and cramped and entertainment a fair . We left early to wait outside for the bus. Linda
Terrific. Our guide Damon was very well versed and arriculate. I was impressed with the popularity of the tour drawing many international tourist. St paul's Baptist Church was very welcoming. The music was inspirational with a great jazz accomament. The brunch at the Cotton was delicious served with a generous helping of jazz. A well spent six hours Thank you.
Excellent tour, really enjoyed it. Well worth doing the brunch also, that was a highlight, the soul food.
Fiquei encantada.
Dear CFSouza, Thank you for sharing your impressions about our tour on TripAdvisor. We are very glad that you enjoyed discovering Harlem with us. It is a neighborhood that we love and we are happy to have had the chance to share our passion with you. We hope to see you again if you come back to New York so we can show you more of the City! Warm regards, Karoll R.
